A Staged Reading-Pineapple Tarts by Sheena Gurbakhash

PINEAPPLE TARTS

Staged reading of Sheena Gurbakhash's "Pineapple Tarts" at George Town Literary Festival.

Why do four women turning sixty get together to make pineapple tarts, and will their friendship survive the experience?

KATHY (Sarah Shahrum) is a savvy TV journalist at the top of her game who can barely operate an electric kettle. SOPHIE (Sandra Sodhy) is a literature teacher and devoted wife & mother until her husband STANLEY (Nigel Skelchy) decides to take up wearing lycra, long-distance cycling, and a mistress young enough to be his daughter. INEZ (Diong Chae Lian) calls the shots at a backpacker hostel and fusses over the future of her unmarried PhD-holding son. Widowed ANURA (Mary George) runs a coconut candy business from her home kitchen.

Set in the early days of Covid-19, Pineapple Tarts explores the impact of the pandemic on women’s lives, the depths of female friendships, the secrets we share and the ones we hold back.
